What Spaces Do You Fill?
“To leave the world a little better than you found it. That's the best a man can ever do.”
Paul Auster (Author)
We’re already in mid-November and Halloween was over two weeks ago; I feel like time is just flying by!! I read a story on Yahoo that really touched me and I wanted to share. The story goes like this...
During our last Halloween, a young boy and his mother went trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. They walked up to a home which, unbeknownst to them, had an outdoor monitoring camera. Also located on the patio was what looked like a small table with a bowl for candy. The young boy approached the bowl of candy and peered into it to realize that it was empty.
Now most kids, and even adults, would have turned around and left to continue to another home. Instead, he reached into his bag of goodies from previous homes, grabbed some candy and placed them in the bowl. He certainly had other options like ringing the doorbell to ask for candy or just simply walking away but he did neither. Without prompting, he decided to leave where he was better than he found it. This entire exchange was captured on video and I’m thankful that the owners of the home decided to shared it with the world.
This story stuck with me and has been a daily reminder of the importance to try to leave good deposits wherever you are. If something isn’t right, rather than ignoring it or complaining, try to fix it.
I love this story and since I heard it, have tried tot commit the lesson to my memory. The simplicity of his action was just so beautiful and pure and I hope that over time, more people will try to take this approach to life.
